Indicator, out now

Two American architects visiting the UK are involved in an accident and are forced to spend the night in a stately home while their bike is fixed. But this accident was no coincidence, and evil forces are drawing together a group of unsuspecting would-be inheritors to a will.

I remember watching this movie as a teenager, and in hindsight I have no idea why I found it at all scary. Written by the late, great Jimmy Sangster (The Revenge of Frankenstein, Taste of Fear) this supernatural variation on Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None is contrived, predictable and silly. Roger Daltrey is one of the many to mysteriously die, so it could reasonably be described as a The Who-dunnit.

Leads Katharine Ross and Sam Elliott met on this film and would subsequently marry, but they look as confused as we are at the crazy nonsense that’s going on under the directorial eye of Richard Marquand, who would go on to direct Return of the Jedi. It’s just feels like one of those awful Murder She Wrote episodes set in the UK where every aspect is a stereotypical US view of how Olde England is. As the unlikable victims are knocked off one by one, we reach a climax that is neither satisfying nor original.

Indicator’s UK Blu-ray premiere features a new HD transfer, commentary by writer Kevin Lyons, the trailers, radio spots and stills and… most bizarrely… a short 1973 film made by Marquand for the Liverpool police force!

Verdict: One for fans of late 70s horror/thriller hybrids, time has not been kind to The Legacy. The HD print is the 100-minute US cut, though the 102-minute UK cut is also included in standard definition. You can also watch a comparison of the two versions, but that’s really for the die hards. 6/10
