A team of Vatican investigators descend upon a church and discover something more terrifying than they first imagined.

Writer/director Elliot Goldner’s 2013 found footage folk horror The Borderlands (AKA Final Prayer) received acclaim at its Fright Fest premiere and continues to disturb more than 10 years after its release.

Deacon (Gordon Kennedy), Gray (Robin Hill) and Mark (Aidan McArdle) are sent to investigate the verisimilitude of a christening video shot at a 13th Century Devonshire church where a miracle appears to have happened, and things rapidly go down hill.

If I’m honest, the found footage horror movie felt like it had run its course by 2013, but the inventive use of headcams and static cameras helps keep things moving. It works best in its quieter moments, and there’s an unnerving sense of dread that continues to keep ratcheting up, leading to an inevitability grim ending.

There’s a new audio commentary by actors Robin Hill and Gordon Kennedy, producer Jennifer Handorf and FX, as well as video interviews with them and a behind-the-scenes featurette. This limited edition Blu-ray comes with art cards and a book of new writing on the film.

Verdict: Inventive and creepy low budget British horror that has a couple of surprises up its sleeve. 8/10
