Renfield needs help to break away from his master…
One of those horror movies that doesn’t push its luck with running time, Renfield is a fun way to spend 90 minutes, with Nicolas Hoult, Nicolas Cage and Awkwafina providing an intriguing combination. (See Stewart Hotston’s review of the movie here for a more detailed examination.) The 4K disc brings out the colours particularly well – the reds and blacks are very distinctive – and the audio feels a step up from the original Blu-ray release.
The extras similarly look better, and while some of them are of the “watch once and then move on” variety, there are a few that are stronger. Renfield’s Dance is very much a Marmite extra – you’re either going to find it hysterical or wonder what the point of it is, and if the latter, don’t bother looking at the making of it! – while the audio commentary only seems to lack input from the caterer’s dog (it’s stuffed to the gills with contributors).
Verdict: One of those movies that surprised me on first viewing at how enjoyable it was – perhaps linked to how much Nic Cage feels reined in – it stands up to repeats, and certainly the 4K is the ideal way to do that. 8/10
