Arrow Video, out now

A television reporter and cameraman follow emergency workers into a dark apartment building and are quickly locked inside with something terrifying.

The original 2007 Spanish found-footage zombie movie that led to three sequels and a US remake (Quarantine) is still the best, and bursts on to HD in Arrow’s extras-packed release.

It’s a lean 75 minutes (if viewed in the 25 fps ‘Production Version’, or 78 minutes in the 24 fps ‘Theatrical Version’) following a film crew as they trail the night shift shouts of the Barcelona fire brigade. A visit to help a distressed elderly lady is our first exposure to a zombie outbreak in an apartment block, and then they can’t escape after the authorities put the building into quarantine lockdown.

The premise of the movie is handheld ‘base under siege’ but it’s the dazzling camerawork and kinetic pace that thrills and never lets up. And if you don’t know the ending… oh, that’s a special treat!

The audio is Spanish DTS-HD MA 5.1 and 2.0 with optional English subtitles, a new audio commentary by film critic and historian Alexandra Heller-Nicholas as well as an archive commentary by directors Jaume Balaguero & Paco Plaza. A whole raft of documentaries include The Making of [REC], How to Shoot a Horror Movie, on-set footage of the cast and crew, a video diary, deleted and extended scenes, trailers and stills. Yes, the complete package.

Verdict: The original and the best – a grim ghost train of a ride through an endless, bloody night. Highly recommended. 10/10
