Limited edition, Second Sight Films, out now

Strict vegetarian Justine faces a merciless onslaught of hazing rituals during her first week at veterinary school. One of these is the eating of raw animal meat, and desperate to fit in, she can’t refuse. This taste of flesh not only compromises her principles but awakens an uncontrollable craving with horrific consequences.

Julia Ducournau’s 2016 French-language drama defies being pigeon-holed into a genre and still has the power to give you a dramatic gut punch. It’s a teen coming-of-age drama, it’s a tale of forbidden addiction, it’s a horror movie… it’s unique. Second Sight’s new release packs the special features on the disc for a film which is more likely to be admired then enjoyed.

Garance Marillier is superb as Justine, the naïf student, starting at school, and who descends all too rapidly to a state where she craves the most forbidden of foods. Her older sister Ella (Alexia Rumpf) is also at the school, but isn’t able to provide the support that’s needed, instead battling her own demons. By the end, you’re likely to have your mouth open, not believing what you’ve witnessed.

The plentiful extras include new interviews with Garance Marillier and producer Jean des Forets, audio commentaries by key personnel, a video essay, panel discussions and deleted scenes. This limited edition also boasts a booklet with new writing by Hannah Woodhead and Emma Westwood plus interview with the director and three art cards.

Verdict: Like its subject matter, this extreme movie will not be to everyone’s taste, and you’ll need a strong stomach to last the distance. But if you can manage the ordeal, this is a tasty collection from Second Sight which should sate most fans’ appetites. 10/10
