StudioCanal
A hunter squares off against a killer whale seeking vengeance for the death of its mate.
Michael Anderson’s (Logan’s Run) 1977 aquatic adventure gets a 4K upgrade from StudioCanal, and while it has never looked better, it’s still one of the poorer Jaws imitators.
Starring Richard Harris and Charlotte Rampling, this tale of a man versus beast is equal parts Jaws and Moby Dick and has the distinction of being Bo Derek’s movie debut and boasting a beautiful score by the late Ennio Morricone. Unfortunately, one tends to fall on the side of the avenging killer whale rather than the humans, and it’s a grim ending all round.
The only extras are a 29-minute interview with French director and journalist Philippe Guedj, talking about the movies production. The UHD transfer is also vibrant, adding detail to the many scenes set at sea.
Verdict: It looks great, but Orca the Killer Whale is no classic and will surely only appeal to collectors of Jaws knockoffs or Andersonphiles. 6/10
