Jinga Films, out now
An outbreak of a mutated rabies virus results in an epidemic that brings chaos and fear to the city streets, forcing a father to battle through hostile territory in a fight to rescue his only son.
How much you’ll enjoy this 2019 Venezuelan zombie horror movie probably depends on how you feel spending 95 minutes watching a corner of humanity fighting a pandemic. It’s well made, but ultimately it adds nothing new to the genre.
Recently-widowed Adam Vargas (Ruben Guevara) has said goodbye to his son Miguel, who is spending time in the countryside with his grandparents. Shortly after, a zombie virus erupts in the city and Adam joins up with neighbour Johnny (Leonidas Urbina) in a quest to find Miguel. Playing out like a segment from World War Z, these are the quick-moving zombies of 28 Days Later, and director Flavio Pedota, working from a script he co-wrote with Yeimar Cabral, does a decent job in ramping up the drama.
Verdict: Competent, South American zombie horror that serves up familiar tropes but in a different continent. 6/10
