Second Sight

Two outsider sisters must battle with not just coming of age as women but also accepting the harsh reality of turning into bloodthirsty werewolves.

John Fawcett’s 2000 coming-of-age werewolf drama Ginger Snaps was a big enough hit that it was followed by both a sequel, prequel and spinoff TV series, and Second Sight have pulled together the movies in this boxset. The original is the strongest of the three, with Unleashed following an obvious sequel route, but prequel Ginger Snaps Back bravely transports the story back to the 19th Century and gives us a very different perspective.

Katherine Isabelle (Hannibal) and Emily Perkins (Supernatural) are consistently good as lycanthropic sisters Ginger and Harriet, and it’s our attachment to them that carries us through the drama. These movies were released before the similarly themed Twilight series, and to me are the stronger franchise.

All three movies are presented in HD, accompanied by a mixture of new and legacy features, ranging from commentaries and interviews to storyboards and trailers. This limited edition comes with art cards and book of new writing.

Verdict: An extras-packed collection of these impressive Canadian werewolf movies. 8/10
