What has happened to the Event Horizon? The Lewis & Clark is sent to investigate…

It’s 25 years since Paul W.S. Anderson’s horror SF movie Event Horizon arrived in cinemas, and to mark the occasion, PHE has produced a terrific new 4K transfer as the key selling point in this new edition. If you’ve got the previous Blu-ray (which is included as an extra), is it worth the upgrade?

If you’re a fan of the film, the answer is undeniably yes, with the attention to detail in the picture giving the movie clarity in a lot of places that even the Blu-ray failed to achieve. From the opening shots through to the rushed ending, you can see details that simply have been obscured up to now. Unfortunately, there’s not a Dolby Atmos track – the previous soundtrack has been ported over from the Blu-ray – and if you want to hear the 2006 commentary, you need to watch the Blu-ray. And as far as special features goes, the Blu-ray unsurprisingly only has those that it’s had since 2008 – which means fans will still want to seek out the Shout! Edition from last year for multiple interviews with cast and crew. That does still mean that the extensive behind the scenes documentary is available, and watching that, there’s that nagging feeling constantly that this could have been so much more…

The 4K set comes with some nice extra items – a blueprint poster. art cards, pin and patch – but they’re really not what you’re paying the money out for!

Verdict: Maybe one day the sound will get the same attention as the picture, but this cleaned up version is possibly the best we’ll get to see the film.  7/10
