Arrow Films
A reporter and a psychic race to close the Gates of Hell after the suicide of a clergyman caused them to open, allowing the dead to rise from their graves.
Lucio Fulcio’s 1980 follow-up to his gory Zombie Flesh Eaters gets the deluxe UHD treatment from Arrow with a 4K scan of the original camera negative.
As with Arrow’s recent release of Fulci’s The House by the Cemetery, the picture benefits from the HDR, adding detail to the dark corners of the city, and making the Abu sand crimson gore really pop. Be aware that this is a very gory zombie movie that doesn’t pull its punches with its extreme depiction of walking dead carnage (this was one of the original ‘video nasties’).
Stars Catriona MacColl and Christopher George are at the middle of this cult classic, fighting their way through the carnage, and as an example of Italian horror it’s a prime specimen of its genre.
This set ports across the many commentaries and features of the previous Blu-ray release. It also includes a double-sided fold-out poster, reproduction lobby cards and a booklet of new writing.
Verdict: Fulci/zombie/horror fans will devour this upgrade of this Italian shocker. 8/10
