In the horror/war movie Overlord, Jovan Adepo plays Boyce – a soldier who is not prepared for he and his comrades find in occupied France. To promote the release of the movie on digital download, 4K, Blu-ray and DVD he answered a few questions…

How did you get involved in the project?

Auditioning, auditioning, auditioning and trying to make it all the way to the final rounds.

What about when you hear it’s a JJ Abrams, Bad Robot project? I mean how exciting and enticing a prospect is something like that?

To me, it was more terrifying because JJ Abrams, Bad Robot, it’s a big deal. They’ve had much success in a lot of their films so just having the opportunity to be a part of it was something that I wanted to take very seriously. From day one, when it came down to reading the script and auditioning, up until now I wanted to put my best foot forward and do the best job I could.

As a film fan yourself what is it about that JJ Abrams/Bad Robot combination that is so exciting? What is it that makes Overlord perhaps such a good fit for Bad Robot and Abrams?

I think the biggest thing about the movies that come from Bad Robot and JJ is just the surprise element. The mystery from their stories, they are very interesting stories [with] complex characters. It was an opportunity that I wasn’t going to let slip from my hands if I could help it.

What is it that makes him such a unique filmmaker, and what was it like meeting the man and getting to work alongside him on this project?

He’s very civil in how he wants to put a project together. He starts with a director who is innovative and has an interesting take on particular stories. And he looks for actors that he feels can bring what these characters need. I seem to be drawn to characters who present themselves as the underdog and I think that JJ really champions the underdog in many of his films. So I think that’s what I’m drawn to.

What is the gist of Overlord?

It’s about a company of paratroopers who are given a mission to drop into this French village and to take out the German military, but they are presented with another element of the military that they weren’t expecting to encounter.

Who is Boyce?

I think that people will find straight off the bat that he doesn’t fit into the motley crew. He initially was not a soldier like many men of that time [as] they had other careers. Boyce was an engineer. He was someone who had his life set. [Then] the war began and his brother served and he felt some strong sense of duty to join the military and to be a participating citizen of [the] United States military.

Can you give us an idea of the dynamics within this group of soldiers?

We have Boyce and he has a couple of guys in the group that he considers friends. A lot of the time the guys butt heads as far as ideas and as far as how to go about continuing this mission but when you’re met with opposition, you know great men try to break those barriers down and get the job done.

How much did it prepare you for the role?

When I found out that we were doing boot camp, I was incredibly excited. I took some time in Los Angeles to learn about the different weapons we’d be using, and got a chance to fire off a few. That was really, really cool.
