StudioCanal, out now

A tormented scientist sets about kidnapping local children to steal their dreams and reverse his accelerated ageing process..

Jeunet and Caro’s beautiful 1995 fantasy was made for 4K. From the stunning costumes by Jean Paul Gaultier to the masterful cinematography by Darius Khondji, it deserves to be seen on the biggest screen and in the best resolution.

The opening scene features multiple Santa Clauses, the red velvet costumes popping out of the screen in this quality 4K transfer. With a colour palette skewed towards the greens and reds, and frequently in dark settings, plenty of detail is now visible in the shadows. And while you should come for the dazzling visuals, stay for one of Angelo Badalamenti’s most glorious scores. Oh, and if you’re ok with subtitles, I’d recommend the 5.1 French audio rather than the OK but less immersive 2.0 English track.

StudioCanal’s disc includes a half-hour interview with the directors and an audio commentary from them both.

Verdict: A much-neglected gem that bursts to life with an HDR makeover. 9/10
