Fabulous Films, out now

A grown man’s childhood teddy bear comes to life as the result of a Christmas wish, but Ted is foul-mouthed and lecherous and starts turning his life upside down.

Seth (Family Guy) MacFarlane’s hit 2012 comedy and its 2015 sequel buddy up for this twin-pack re-release (with both films available to buy separately as well) and if you’re in the right frame of mind there’s enough jokes to make you smile if you set your funny bone to ‘broad’ and ‘obvious’.

One of the joys of the first film is the sub-plot with Sam J Jones living in the shadow of his Flash Gordon persona, and Patrick Stewart appears to be having a blast as the narrator. But ultimately this is a one-joke premise, and Ted 2 doesn’t have much more to say. A plot thread about Ted’s right to have a child with his girlfriend seems out of place in such an already ludicrous scenario, and it works best when it sticks to its ‘bad-mouthed bear’ selling point.

This twin-pack includes extended versions of both movies, taking them both up to nearly two hours apiece – too long for a comedy in all honesty. There’s a decent bunch of extra on each movie – commentary, deleted scenes, alternate takes and gag reels.

Verdict: Dirty laughs – and this might be just the ticket during lockdown – but don’t expect sophistication. 6/10
