An all-new documentary, covering the legacy and career of one our generation’s most beloved horror icons, the legendary Robert Englund.
There’s a theme that runs through this excellent documentary, and that’s how gracious Robert Englund is to everyone, from co-workers to fans. I can personally testify to this, as many years ago I found myself sat next to him at a theatre in London’s West End. My first surprise was that Englund has such an interest in the stage (that’s covered in detail here) and then that he would be so accommodating to a fan who had bothered him. He made it feel like it was no bother, and in this film he admits that he behaves like this because he remembers what it’s like to be a fan.
The documentary follows Englund’s life chronologically from childhood to present, sharing how he was initially on the stage before making a number of popular movies. The V miniseries was his breakthrough, followed by his career-defining turn as Freddy Krueger. While most of the commentary comes directly from Englund, there are contributions from the likes of Heather Langenkamp, Lance Henriksen, William Katt, Mick Garris, Eli Roth, Bill Moseley, Tony Todd and others, sharing their own experiences
At a little over two hours, it’s a comprehensive dive into the actor’s life, peppered with fascinating insight and anecdotes, and Englund’s acceptance of the fact that he will forever be associated with Freddy. He embraces the genre that made him, and is forever grateful for the opportunities it has given him.
The movie is screening exclusively on the Icon Film Channel from 2nd October, with Special Collector’s Edition Blu-ray and TVOD/EST available from 6th November. The Blu-ray includes Horror Icons, Nightmare Café with Jack Coleman, A Conversation with the Directors, Robert Englund: Chatterbox, A Peek Behind the Curtain: Dance Macabre and four UK-exclusive art cards
Verdict: A fascinating and comprehensive look at the man behind the glove – and he really is such a great guy. 10/10
