Darkness descends upon Cardiff…

For reasons that will be clear to those who’ve read the reviews of the first two stories in this box set, I’m a little disappointed by the revelation at the end of this episode – not because I don’t want there to be more stories featuring the team that we had in series 5, but because of the very powerful storytelling in the series 6 opener. There’s a certain terrible inevitability about the cliffhanger as soon as Jack and Colin get back to the latter’s flat and something that Orr picked up on in the opener is followed through…

That’s only one thread in a strong story, with the focus for much of the time on Yvonne and Sergeant Andy. As Tracy Ann Oberman and Tom Price discuss in the extras, they’re a fascinating couple who bring out very different sides to each other – and hopefully this is a storyline that will continue for some time to come (although I’m not sold on the sitcom idea…!) Knowing Yvonne, the listener is ahead of Andy in terms of what she’s planning and you want to shout at him to think a bit more – yet still want to see whether she’s as good as she thinks she is.

Verdict: A strong Torchwood tale from Mr Dorney – with a sting at the end for Captain Jack… 9/10
