Mr Colchester and Ng investigate after a young podcaster is found dead – torn to pieces…
Robin Bell’s story feels for a lot of the time as if it’s a standalone tale with only peripheral connections to the main storyline of the God Among Us season, but there’s much more to it than simply Torchwood looking into a strange death. It doesn’t help that following the revelations of the previous episode, the last thing that either Mr Colchester or Ng can admit is their connection to Torchwood, and thanks to the Disaster Relief Committee (with the last name in that being the most important), they can’t even access the facilities at the Hub. There’s a fascinating conversation at the start about what drives them both to continue with their work (and it’s something that Paul Clayton and Alexandria Riley discuss in the extras as well) – but there’s a more important conversation between them at the end of the episode that I fear may be setting up a lot more problems for the future.
It’s a story about the power of faith and belief – something that has perhaps more potency in the Doctor Who universe, thanks to what we know (even if most of the participants don’t) happened in Last of the Time Lords – with strong performances from Clayton, Riley and Ramon Tikaram as Colin. Its tone changes quite dramatically from scene to scene, with Scott Handcock keeping things well under control directorially aided by some very effective sound design from Steve Foxon.
Verdict: What starts as a classic Torchwood investigation becomes something far more personal. 9/10
