Even funerals aren’t immune to alien attack…
The first story in God Among Us, the new season of Torchwood adventures – created with the blessing and assistance of the show’s creator Russell T Davies – acts as a reminder of what’s come before in this revamped version of the series as well as setting up some of the key strands for the future. It seems as if Mr Colchester is definitely dead and gone – much as I hope the character returns, it would undercut a great deal of the emotional effect of this episode if he simply pops up again as part of a Devious Torchwood Yvonne Hartman Plot (© and all rights reserved).
James Goss gives us insight into how all the characters have been changed by recent events – from the role of NG (presumably Not-Gwen, which is how Alexandria Riley’s character is now being referred to in-universe) as Herald to the aliens’ god to Orr’s intrigued reactions at Mr Colchester’s funeral. Ramon Tikaram guest stars as Colin, Colchester’s husband, whose attempts to deal with his loss are the centre point of the episode. It does seem odd there’s no reference to the events of Miracle Day and the dead not dying during that, however… or are we taking it that the universe reboot in Series 5 of Doctor Who eliminated that from having happened?
Verdict: Death has never seemed permanent in the Torchwood universe (unsurprising given its lead character) but it’s given proper reverence here. 8/10
