Demon Records, out now
The TARDIS lands on board a spaceship in orbit around a planet known as the Sense-Sphere.
Demon’s Doctor Who vinyl releases are always things of beauty, but the classic 1964 story, complete on LP for the first time, gets the extra special treatment here.
Presented across three 140g Sense-Sphere marble discs (that’s a mottled blue effect to you and me), the William Hartnell six-parter written by Peter R Newman gets one episode per side of disc and has linking narration provided by William Russell, who appears as Ian Chesterton.
Whether or not you rate the story (it’s OK) or already own the 2008 CD recordings or 2012 DVD is immaterial, as the Demon releases are all about being collector’s editions. This set includes an embossed, frameable art print, while each disc has its own illustrate storage pocket. If so inclined, you can arrange them to form a linked illustration. A booklet includes cast and credits for the episodes.
Verdict: While I personally rate The Sensorites as mid to low tier Hartnell, Demon’s presentation is again exemplary. Another welcome addition to the growing library of Doctor Who treasures. 8/10
