Reeltime Pictures’ new series of DVDs focusing on Doctor Who exhibitions opens with a look at The Museum of Classic Sci-Fi.
Neil Cole’s basement museum in his Northumberland village home is the perfect example of fan determination. Various contributors to this 50-minute programme describe the idea of such a museum as being ‘unlikely’ and ‘insane’, and yet here it is.
Hosted by Sophie Aldred (Ace), the main feature follows Cole from his initial purchase of the property to the transformation of its cellar, to the procurement of the props and the two grand openings. Don’t expect a detailed tour of the museum – surely that’s something to be experienced in person – but instead enjoy seeing how Cole’s enthusiasm translated into an asset for both the local community and fandom.
There’s a well-selected set of talking heads chiming in on the museum (one is even described as ‘Evil Dalek Genius’) and Aldred’s witty narration ensures that we never take this too seriously. A Sontaran in a Co-Op and a Sea Devil riffing on a guitar are just two of the bonkers yet delightful sights you’ll experience!
A further half hour is devoted to Cole’s meticulous restoration of the props, and we get to see how he transformed Mestor and Terileptils (among others) from poor condition to display quality.
Verdict: A story of success in the most unlikeliest of circumstances, this bodes well for future releases in the series. 8/10
