Titan Comics, out now
The 13th Doctor and her ‘fam’ travel back to 1969 to enjoy the Woodstock festival in New York, but instead find themselves in London. The Tenth Doctor and Martha are also in the capital city, waiting to pick up Billy Shipton the moment he arrives in this time zone.
There’s always something special about a multi-Doctor story, even more so when a popular monster is featured. This 21st Century version of The Two Doctors is a joy – Titan’s comic book series treading the same road as the 13th Doctor’s TV tenure – year one was all about new monsters, with year two allowing the judicious use of popular legacy villains.
We’re in Blink territory here, Steven Moffat’s Doctor-lite episode of Series 3, where Sally Sparrow was the lead protagonist. This time, we’re seeing what happened to the Doctor and Martha when they were off-screen, Martha being incensed at having to work in a clothes shop. The Tenth Doctor has been separated from his TARDIS in 2007, temporally shifted by the Weeping Angels.
Yaz, Graham and Ryan are sent to find Doctor 10, as this is less likely to create a time paradox, and they are soon on his trail. The 13th Doctor, meanwhile, finds Martha in her clothes shop where she finds out that people are still disappearing, suggesting that the angels are up to their usual tricks.
Verdict: The two Doctors have yet to meet, but this doesn’t matter, as there’s enough tension in the build-up to the return of classic Who’s mist impressive monsters. What a treat. 9/10
