The gang are in 1500s Europe at the time of the Guelder Wars, but the most pressing issue Doctor and her ‘fam’ are the Stilean Flesh Eaters they’ve just found in a barn!

After five sterling issues by artist Rachael Stott, we have a change mid-story, and while Roberta Ingranata’s renderings of the cast are less photorealistic, they’re no less impressive. She still captures the essence of each of the four leads, even if her interpretations are more stylised. I also like that the backgrounds she creates to the story are credible for the 13th Doctor – artists are not limited by BBC budgets and yet we have locations that feel like they could have been filmed in Cardiff or its environs.

The toothsome creatures present an immediate danger to the gang, though the Doctor is keen to stress they they’re dangerous, not evil. But it’s not long before they make a break for it and only the timely intervention of the sole villager Magda saves their hides. I imagine we’ll be seeing more of her.

The story then switches to a new location and surely it’s more than a coincidence that the TARDIS has dropped to a time and place also previously covered in the popular Hidden Human History podcast. And just who are those people at the end? It’s all great fun!

Verdict: It’s fun switching locations mid-story, even more so with an exciting new artist. The intrigue is building, the Doctor really has no clue what’s going on… truth be told, neither do we! 8/10
