Titan Comics, out November 7
The Doctor and her friends have their visit to the sentient Nebulae of Blecplam Two-and-a-Half interrupted by the appearance of a traveller trying to escape from the time vortex.
And so, after the build-up ‘road to…’ stories and wraparound appearance in ‘The Many Lives of…’ special, the 13th Doctor finally gets her own comic book series. Rachael Stott’s artwork is excellent, bringing Jodie Whittaker’s mannerisms to life in startling detail, from a sense of wonder to gurning disbelief. All four leads are beautifully captured, as Stott brings to life Eisner-nominated Jody Houser’s script.
The only downside to this story is that it’s over just as it gets going. Page 25 concludes with a traditional cliffhanger, begging the question as to whether one should wait and binge in one go once the story has played out, or nibble away piece by piece and waiting for each cliffhanger to be resolved.
Verdict: Some remarkable artwork that captures Team TARDIS with astonishing clarity and familiarity in a story that’s just starting to reveal its secrets. Series 11 will be over on the TV before we know it – thankfully we can keep the story alive in print during the fallow periods. Oh, and there’s a whopping 13 different covers to choose from – which will you get? 9/10
