Titan Comics, out now
After a deadly run-in with Weeping Angels and the Autons in 1969 London, the 13th and 10th Doctors reunite to face another familiar enemy.
Titan have renamed their ongoing Doctor Who comic and reset the numbering with this first part of a series following 13th Doctor/fam and 10th Doctor/Rose Tyler in a thrilling adventure with the Sea Devils.
When the Doctor opens the TARDIS doors, she discovers a ravaged London, suggesting that the Earth has been conquered centuries ago – she can taste the shift in the timeline. Humans are being rounded up and subjugated by Sea Devils, not in their Pertwee string vests or Davison samurai armour, but new military fatigues, with their familiar bike lamp guns.
Leading the resistance is Rose Tyler, though this is a Rose who doesn’t recognise the Doctor, meaning that a time paradox has been created and needs fixing. Jody Houser’s script is breezy and captures Jody Whittaker’s enthusiasm, and it’s great seeing the beaky former occupants of the Earth back in action again, skilfully recreated by Roberta Ingranata.
Verdict: An exciting launch issue, peppered with lots of fan-pleasing legacy characters and creatures. This promises to be a blast. 8/10
