Kate Stewart has been shot – and she knows that it will be a fatal wound…

Guy Adams’ script for this final story gives Jemma Redgrave a chance to play multiple Kate Stewarts, all subtly different in the way she presents them (slight variations in speed and pitch give us aural clues as to which sides of her personality are dominant in each), and you really have to go with the flow as far as the science of this one is concerned. Yes, quantum entanglement can have unusual effects but for the purposes of this story, Time is bending in some… unusual ways.

Another strand teams River and Osgood, which, as with Osgood’s now-frequent pairings with Katy Manning’s Jo, brings out other sides to the current UNIT resident scientist – and some scenes which would have been great to see on screen between Alex Kingston and Ingrid Oliver.

There’s some fun interplay to be had between the often cautious Kate and the rather more happy go lucky River and Adams makes the most of this, with one particular plotline getting a resolution that fits both characters perfectly.

Verdict: A fine cap to this current UNIT era – a new team will be responsible for the next set of adventures – and the pre-Day of the Doctor outfit. 9/10
