The wind is talking – and it’s asking for help…
One of those stories that needs to maintain its level of seriousness throughout, otherwise the whole edifice will come crashing down to Earth (as will at least one of the characters!), Lisa McMullin’s tale of weird weather events that are caused by a distress signal actually making things worse is a well written contribution to the UNIT saga. McMullin balances the two main narrative strands well – featuring Kate Stewart, and Osgood and Sam respectively – while ensuring that we never lose track of the bigger picture. In particular, there are some great moments for Kate as she has to deal with similar hostile elements to those her father did in Terror of the Zygons.
Ken Bentley’s direction maintains the tension as various countdowns come into play, and Howard Carter’s music and sound design sell the idea of the weather getting out of control very well – there’s a moment where a character is suspended in mid-air and it really does sound as if they are out there, highly exposed to the elements.
Verdict: We’ve had other weird weather stories in recent times, but this one builds itself nicely around the characters. 8/10
