Jackie Tyler and the Doctor haven’t exactly got along… and when she become Glubby Glub’s top salesperson, she just knows he’s going to screw it up for her. As usual…
The relationship between Jackie Tyler and the Ninth Doctor is one of those elements that you can tell would have had a lot more time devoted to it if that incarnation had stuck around for longer than just the one season, and one of the delights of this box set is the chance for Camille Coduri to step back to that far more antagonistic period. James Goss has a knack for mixing up the mundane and the abnormal while providing strong characterisation, and that’s on show here – and he doesn’t hesitate to give Coduri a large share of the action. The scenes between her and Nick Briggs as the Ninth Doctor work really well, and as Coduri points out in the extras, there are times it really does feel as if she’s there with Eccleston.
Ioan Morris & Rhys Downing’s music has worked well across the whole set, but it’s at its best here, helping director Helen Goldwyn continue to maintain the 2005 feel of the series. This has been an interesting experiment for Big Finish, and one that has worked extremely well – roll on the Tenth and Eleventh Doctor sets.
Verdict: A strong conclusion to a highly enjoyable set. 9/10
