A series of raids on electronics stores done by something inhuman, and mysterious voices on the airwaves…

The last story in this set – and, it seems, the last New Counter-Measures story for some time (barring the group’s appearance in the new Seventh Doctor comic strip from Titan) – pits the team against the Great Intelligence, and brings back Professor Travers, played here by Tim Bentinck. Some fans will be aware of the Lethbridge-Stewart series of books licensed by the creator’s estate, and the editor (and sometimes writer) of those books has penned this audio – although luckily, there’s not been an attempt to correlate this story into the continuity of those books, instead sticking with the official Doctor Who continuity into which Counter-Measures fits.

It’s something of an oddity with heavy indebtedness to some other Doctor Who stories besides The Web of Fear (the beginning feels like a beat for beat retread of scenes from Robot) with the dialogue a little too melodramatic, and some interesting additions made to the team’s abilities. The Yeti aren’t used particularly well (and there’s a scene where two characters confirm that they are robots, then moments later one of them thinks a Yeti has been hurt!), while the Intelligence itself seems to be full of bluster. Tim Bentinck’s Travers is a worthy continuation of Jack Watling’s original performance, and the treatment of the character here is by far the best part of the story.

Verdict: A bit of a damp squib to conclude the set. 6/10
