cmncm0102_troubledwaters_1417The Counter Measures team heads beneath the waves…

Ian Potter’s script for this second 1970s adventure for the Counter Measures team induces a suitable feeling of claustrophobia as the team investigate a nuclear submarine that has a potentially deadly cargo – and no crew aboard. There are plenty of twists and turns, and some interesting insights into our heroes as, one by one, they all have to face up to elements of their own pasts.

We’re very much in the territory of 1970s movies like The Medusa Touch, with more than a tinge of the paranoia that was so prevalent in the era’s entertainment, and it’s interesting to see who it is among the team who’s easiest manipulated – and who is able to resist. Vincent Carmichael and Christian Edwards make good foils for the team (to say more about either of their roles would be too much of a spoiler). Rob Harvey’s soundscape reinforces the closed-in feel while Nick Briggs’ score feels very reminiscent of Dudley Simpson’s musical contributions to the parent show at the time.

Verdict: A well-produced taut tale. 8/10
