The question that Tom Ellis’ Lucifer poses in the Netflix series is at the heart of Tessa North’s historical tale that brings this first set of full cast Eleventh Doctor stories to a close. It’s a tale that gives Jacob Dudman some very particular challenges, likewise for director Nicholas Briggs and sound designer Lee Adams – in many ways it’s a quite visual script that has to twist to a certain extent to work on audio as well as it does.

There’s some quite heavy handed social commentary going on throughout – why are people condemned to a debtors’ prison in the circumstances they find themselves in – and the threat is appropriately spooky (it would make a good Halloween listen) with some quite graphic moments.

Verdict: Dudman’s performance lifts a sometimes confusing script. 6/10
