It’s never a good thing to be the last surviving member of a species…

Guy Adams wraps up this first set of 10th Doctor Chronicles with a story told with a very distinctive narrative voice, which gives Jacob Dudman ample opportunity to show his talents outside of his excellent recreation of David Tennant’s performance as the Doctor (which is at its best here, by the way). There’s a wry, sometimes sardonic, humour on display which plays with the audio medium in a way that is reminiscent of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy in its relaxed approach to storytelling.

It’s also good to hear Michelle Ryan reprising her role as Lady Christina – she sounds as if she’s having a great deal of fun, and the way in which the character is handled bodes well for the upcoming box set. She and the Doctor have a nice repartee, and while the story deals with some weighty topics – and there’s at least one point where you do actually seriously wonder if things are going awry – there’s a sense of someone enjoying the adventure. It’s inevitably set late in the Tenth Doctor’s timeline, and that sense of impending doom looms over the story without ever completely overshadowing it.

Verdict: As my daughter commented when we’d finished listening to this, a very well-written tale. 9/10
