The Fifth and Tenth Doctors have to join forces in Paris…
As producer David Richardson notes in the extras, this is one of the ideas that was floating around from the earliest days that David Tennant joined Big Finish’s roster of Doctors – team his incarnation up with the 5th Doctor, played by his father-in-law, Peter Davison. We’ve already seen the two of them in action in Time Crash, and David Llewellyn’s script recaptures the dynamic established in that, and builds on it for an hour long story. It’s great fun, with Llewellyn throwing Shelley Conn’s Time Agent into the mix as well (a character I hope we hear more of down the line) and playing on the 10th Doctor’s hazy memories of the encounter.
Ken Bentley keeps the story rattling along, helped by the Doctors’ energetic performance. Nicholas Briggs’ Cybermen are suitably imposing, while Mark Gatiss’ Joseph Delon reacts credibly to the different scenarios into which he’s thrown and Howard Carter’s sound design and score are suitably sepulchral.
Verdict: A very enjoyable romp reuniting these well-matched incarnations. 9/10
