And so we reach the grand finale of this missing season of Jago & Litefoot, and the missing piece of the puzzle is put in place. There’s no one more appropriate to narrate this tale than Christopher Benjamin, and under Lisa Bowerman’s watchful eye as director, he gives us his take on Litefoot, Jago, Ellie, Inspector Quick and all the other key characters.
Julian Richards’ novelisation, based on the script he co-wrote with Justin Richards, is another one of these that uses the change in form to tell the story slightly differently from the way it would have been as a full cast tale – there are references to a mysterious “he” early on, and a critical character is an “it” rather than a more personal pronoun. It would be fascinating to read the original scripts – certain sections regarding the villains and their interactions prior to this story must have been quite different.
There’s plenty of meta references in this, both to Doctor Who and wider adventures (there’s one in particular that had me mouthing the line along with Benjamin), and there’s a definite feel in this version of the end of an era, as pieces are pulled together and references made to the entirety of the Jago & Litefoot canon. You’re definitely going to want to listen to Jago & Litefoot Forever after this, particularly if this does mark the end of tales for the Infernal Investigators at Big Finish.
Verdict: No one better to tell this final story than the brilliant Mr Benjamin. 9/10
