The search for a missing TARDIS crew puts Leela, Rasmus and Veklin in danger…
There’s a very New Adventures feel to Alfie Shaw’s script for this third tale, and it’s one that you really don’t want to read a load of spoilers for before embarking – some of its twists feel obvious in hindsight, others savvy Doctor Who fans (particularly those who have indulged in those early Virgin books) may well guess before they’re revealed. But as always it’s in how the mix is put together, and how it’s delivered that counts.
It’s also an opportunity to learn more about the new dynamic and just how far certain people will go to forward their agenda. What is actually the right thing to do – and how does that change in a war situation? Which is more important – winning the war and saving innocents, or defeating the enemy? Those are questions that are at the heart of the best Time War stories – whether it’s in this range, or the War Doctor/Master tales – and as you might guess, Leela has a different perspective from her Time Lord “colleagues”… and that’s before someone starts meddling.
It’s another story that I’d recommend trying to listen to in one go – and another that takes the characters, and us, deeper into the moral grey area.
Verdict: The sort of story that would play out very differently against any other backdrop, which means all bets are off. 8/10
