Mark Seven has brought the Doctor and Anya back to a place he once called home…

As is noted in the final scene of the story, there seems to be a theme developing of investigation of the back stories of the Doctor’s companions, and I’m trusting David Richardson and his team that this isn’t simply lampshading a problem, but that there’s more to come that will explain why these have happened in quick succession to the characters (if not those of us mere mortals waiting three months for the new set!). The focus is firmly on Joe Sims’ Mark, but there’s plenty for David Tennant’s Doctor and Jane Slavin’s Anya to do as they investigate what exactly the place is.

Roy Gill’s script provides some interesting insights into Mark’s character – and some flashbacks that feel oddly familiar (which of course in itself may be a Clue) – and it’s definitely one of those stories you’ll listen to differently the second time around once certain discoveries have been made. Howard Carter’s sound design and score give what could be something of a “bottle show” a much more grandiose feel while Ken Bentley brings together another strong guest cast.

Verdict: A more cerebral tale kicks off this second set well. 8/10
