The French Revolution. An epic hero. But maybe not the one you were expecting…
Chris Chapman’s tale for the Sixth Doctor is the last monthly release featuring Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant, and in an odd way acts as a capstone to their travels – the depiction of the Doctor and Peri shows just how far the characters have come during their Big Finish journey. Seen in that light, some of the speeches and discussion in the final part perhaps don’t jar as much as they might: there’s some righteous anger that otherwise might feel a little overdone.
I have to admit being a little concerned by the early scenes, with their “theatrical” French accents, but once Anthony Howell arrives as Donat – by far the most rounded character of the script – things settle down. Questions you may have about the Scarlet Pimpernel are addressed early on, and it diverts into a discussion about the qualities of mercy and the cost of redemption.
John Ainsworth has brought together a cast whose talents for multiple voices are put to good use and Andy Hardwick’s sound design brings 18th century France to life well, even if the score is occasionally a little overpowering.
Verdict: What starts as a romp becomes something deeper. 7/10
