There are monsters on Gokroth, of that there is no doubt; but quite what they are and where they came from is another matter entirely…

Big Finish are really diversifying with the main range this year; following on from the Kamelion trilogy for the 5th Doctor we now have a trio of stories featuring the 7th Doctor and Mags, Jessica Martin’s character from The Greatest Show in the Galaxy. The werewolf has already had one revival in recent times in Titan Comics’ 7th Doctor strip (drawn by Martin herself – check out our interview with her about it here). Martin has had a very varied career but it’s clear that Mags has something of a warm place in her heart, and she jumps straight back into character easily.

Matt Fitton’s story is both a homage to and deconstruction of the Universal horror movies of the 1940s – there are places where the influences are freely acknowledged by those involved as they almost play into the stereotypes, but some nifty scripting means that this becomes an inversion of some of the tropes. New producer Emma Haigh and director Samuel Clemens have brought some new voices into the mix – lovely as it is to hear the members of the “Big Finish repertory company”, these come without baggage and I’m looking forward to hearing more from them (yes, I know there’s a bit of logic missing there, but there’s a happy middle ground to be found).

Verdict: An enjoyable start to a new set of adventures for our favourite werewolf. 8/10
