Madam Vastra has some answers…

It’s down to David K. Barnes to move things on considerably in this penultimate episode of what I strongly hope is just the first series of Doctor Who Redacted. I mentioned last time that there was an issue that arises with “Requiem” (i.e. Madam Vastra) appearing on the Powell Estate in 2022, and that is indeed directly addressed, and handled very sensitively – indeed, setting up a potential conversation between her and the Doctor at some point down the line on the subject (which I would hope Barnes would write, based on this episode). Barnes’ work for Big Finish has consistently shown a knowledge and love of Doctor Who, and an ability to see it from a slightly different angle, and he brings those to bear here too.

It’s not really much of a spoiler to say that our three girls are reunited, but all is not instantly forgiven – there are stress fractures in those relationships that are not going to be easily repaired. I’m glad that there’s recognition by Cleo of some almost hypocritical behaviour… but they’ve all got a lot more to worry about.

As do we as an audience, given what we learn within this episode… There’s a lot to sort out in the finale to wrap this up and give a degree of closure, but on the basis of the past nine weeks, I have confidence in Ella Watts, Juno Dawson and the team.

Verdict: Something of a smelly journey to answers for the crew, making for a strong penultimate instalment. 9/10
