Titan Comics, out now
Agent Breen, designated as prisoner Number Six in the Village, has just shot himself point blank in the head – a calculated risk that seems to pay off.
O ye of little faith. After some fairly unconvinced reviews of the launch issue, this series has grown from strength to strength. It’s hard to believe that we only have one more left in this limited run, and I have enjoyed it from the opening panel. When all four issues are inevitably pulled together as a slender graphic novel it will be very easy to consume in a single sitting. As it stands, we have to wait a month between each cliffhanger, thus earning the anticipation of the subsequent resolution.
The alchemy that writer Peter Milligan and artist Colin Lorimer have achieved is a comic book that not only looks and feels like the 50-year-old classic series but makes it feel fresh and new. It whips along at a breathtaking pace, dropping Breen from one altered state to another, and we can only sit and watch helplessly as his torturers turn the screws tighter.
Verdict: The identities of Six and Two are known, but who is Number One? I really can’t wait to see how this unravels in the final 25 pages – be seeing you in a month for the finale Fall Out. 9/10
