The Doctor and Ruby have followed a mysterious signal to a shopping mall in the last days of Earth.
The first regular issue in Titan’s run of Fifteenth Doctor comics feels reassuringly like it could slot right in to the current run of episodes, featuring the return of a favourite monster that hasn’t featured on screen yet with this regeneration.
The Doctor and Ruby are following a time-displaced cyber-gauntlet (hey, it’s not a spoiler if the metal meanies are on the cover of some editions!) and land at the last shopping mall on Earth. It’s meant to be empty, the humans long having departed to safety, but there’s a bunch of shoppers who refuse to leave, and it’s not long before the Cybermen reveal themselves.
It’s a great opening chapter, combining just the amount of intrigue in Dan Watters’ script with some lovely recreation of the Doctor and Ruby in Kelsey Ramsay’s art.
Verdict: A much stronger offering than the Thirteenth Doctor’s run, and a welcome dose of the Doc while there’s no new episodes airing on TV. 8/10
