Six year old Logan finds himself inside his favourite dinosaur game…

One of the delights of running your own website is that occasionally you can shine a light on something that otherwise wouldn’t get the attention – and Logan Smith’s Dinosaur Nerd Boy is a case in point. The six year old son of Anna author Sammy HK Smith devised this story – which features him at its centre – and worked out the entire plot and script.

It’s divided into short chapters, each of which has plenty of room for expansion into its own issue, and there’s a clear plot progression from start to finish. Often kids of that age will tell you a story and it simply rambles aimlessly; this doesn’t.  It’s remarkable work for a child of that age, and kudos to his parents for backing him and for ensuring that it has been produced properly.

Joshua Cornah’s illustrations are part of the magic of the book, keeping us firmly in the imagination of a six year old but with plenty of delights of their own – there’s a look in the eye of one of the dinosaurs that reminds me of one of my favourite Garfield strips, promising mayhem and menace.

Verdict: A genuine treat – and I look forward to reading further adventures.
