Ex Blade Runner Ash returns to the rain-soaked dystopic future of Los Angeles but now the hunter has become the hunted.
As with each of the three sequences in this comic book series follow-up to the Ridley Scott movie, the first issue spends a lot of time world building. It’s now 2026 and Ash is re-establishing herself on the grimy, rain-swept streets of LA. This gives artist Andres Guinaldo the chance to revisit the iconic street scenes from the movie, and for Ash to meet up with her former captain, now working on the streets.
To everyone’s delight we get to visit the grand Tyrell pyramid building, although it is little more than a shell now following the death of its founder. Ash is attacked by squatters who have reclaimed it as their own, and is rescued by a former employee. But who is the sane one here, and what will Selwyn do to prevent Ash from tracking him down?
Verdict: As always, Blade Runner 2019 offers some stunning visuals to support an authentic, multi-layered script. We’re into the third and final act, so savour every issue. 8/10
