Penguin, out now
Cece has to travel through Minecraft to reunite with her friend.
If you’ve got a youngster who’s into Minecraft, then this will make a great Christmas present – I’m reliably informed that the sections that are based in the game are authentic (which you’d hope from a licensed book!) and give that feel of immersion in a new reality that comes with the game.
It’s something of a standard quest, with Davies throwing her characters and the reader a few curveballs along the way and the author ensures that you’re fully invested in Cece’s fate – something that’s not always easy in this sort of novel, where being “killed” is part and parcel of the characters’ everyday experience within the game.
Verdict: With Davies careful not to write down to her audience, this is an enjoyable adventure. 7/10
