A look at the history of apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic movies, with a focus on The Salute of the Jugger.
Here’s the thing about Danny Stewart – he writes about the movies that others would typically steer clear from. That’s not a criticism by any means, and it’s to his credit that he has an enthusiasm for certain films and spends the time diving into them – hence his previous volumes on Soldier and Hellraiser III.
The meat of this book is a look at David Webb Peoples’ The Salute of the Jugger, a 1989 future sports action movie starring Rutger Hauer and Joan Chen. It didn’t set the box office on fire at the time, but it clearly resonated with Stewart, who here interviews writer director Peoples about the movie, as well as providing some analysis on the movie.
The remainder of the book is an assortment of reviews and articles about the post-apocalyptic movies, with content by John Kenneth Muir and John Hansen, as well as a lengthy list of movies from the genre.
Verdict: Another film-focused volume from Stewart. He knows what he likes and his enthusiasm is here in abundance. 6/10
