“Are the birds gonna eat us, Mummy?”
Social anxiety meets human territorial entitlement as Keri’s environmentally conscious scruples get thrown out of the window when a nest of birds disrupts her tranquil (and expensive) park view.
Well not just that, it’s disrupting her sleep too, and that of her over-stretched partner, Barden. We hear Keri’s constant, negative thoughts as she frets over her acceptance into a particular social group and the lengths she’ll go to so that they don’t ‘think less of her’. Again, it’s shockingly relatable for anyone who has ever tried to keep up appearances or aspire to a social stratum in life that they aren’t quite ready for. There’s nothing wrong with ambition, but these are things you can’t force.
When disaster strikes for her unwelcome avian neighbours, revenge comes swiftly on ebony wings. Hitchcock would have been proud.
Verdict: An eye for an eye as the Lusus terror takes to the skies. 8/10
