Things take a turn as Dan searches for answers at work…

Lucy Catherine’s supernatural thriller veers sharply into horror territory for this penultimate episode of the second season – in a ghoulish way I’m quite intrigued as to how Caleb Knightley achieved the sound effect for a certain ocular activity… There are some confrontations, and at least one person who deserved some form of comeuppance for their behaviour gets considerably more than you – or the other characters – might anticipate.

Dan definitely doesn’t have much luck with his places of work – nearly drowned in the first series, and facing some very unpleasant possibilities (and people) in this – but don’t let your attention be diverted from the increasingly obsessive behaviour of former priest Lindsay. Jasmine Hyde never overplays the role, but there’s the occasional moment where you do wonder quite what she’s up to.

The relevance of climate change to the story is also becoming more clear, with yet more moments from “history” casually dropped into Dan’s narration. Things are building up in the world outside Harland…

Verdict: Some surprisingly graphic moments shock as they’re meant to. 8/10
