Ryan Coogler continues to stand up on his post-Sinners breakthrough in the most interesting of ways, notes Alasdair Stuart. In addition to his X-Files update going to pilot, with an incredible lead cast, he’s also confirmed to be developing a new Disney + show based on K.A. Applegate’s legendary Animorphs series.
According to Variety, the show is in early development with Bryan Wolcott, whose adaptations of Margaret Attwood’s The Testaments hits screens this week, on board to write and executive produce. No word yet on whether Applegate or her husband and co-creator Nick Grant are involved in this production but, given Coogler’s methodical and smart approach to his projects, I wouldn’t be surprised.
First released in 1996, Animorphs focused on five teenagers who receive the ability to morph into any animal they touch. Over the course of 54 books in just under a decade, Applegate and Grant told a story that took in time travel, alien invasion, attitudes towards physical disabilities, long-term PTSD and what happens when you kill Hitler. They are the definition of a wild ride and if the show gets through development this is going to sit next to the likes of Percy Jackson and their upcoming Eragon adaptation but in very dark and weird ways. I’m looking forward to it.
