Netflix have been doing consistently fun work with adult animation for a long time now and last weekend, news emerged of a perfect fit for their strand hitting development: epochal comic series Powers, created by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming.
The original series focused on Detective Christian Walker, a slab of a man whose job is to deal with superhuman related crimes, and his new partner, Deena Pilgrim. Walker is Batman in a button up, Pilgrim is a pinwheeling violence machine convinced if she sprints fast enough she can outrun her bad choices. Neither of them are as together as they think they are and that’s before they catch the most important case of their lives.
It’s a brilliant series, determined, focused and unlike anything else in its field. If it sounds familiar, then it should, because Powers lived briefly as a live action show starring Susan Heyward as Pilgrim and Sharlto Copley as Walker. That was a fun time, but animation seems to be a better fit for it. Especially given how successful spiritual compatriot Invincible has been in the field.
Bendis is fixing to have a busy year. His historical graphic novel Torso, about the hunt for America’s first serial killer, is back in development too, this time at Netflix.
While we’re waiting, check out the live action version (It’s pretty fun) and the original graphic novel, Who Killed Retro Girl? Which should be available here:
