Not going to lie, this one hurts a little bit, writes Alasdair Stuart.

After 17 years, the management at Cardiff City’s Mermaid Quay have announced that the memorial wall to Torchwood’s Finest, Ianto Jones, is coming down. The wall has stood for almost twenty years, maintained by Carol-Anne Hillman and remains a popular spot for Doctor Who fans to visit. It’s also not that far from Eddie’s Diner, a frequent filming location and the interior of Clara Oswald and Ashildr’s TARDIS so you could pop round the corner and raise a milkshake to Mr Jones.

It’s not all doom and gloom ether. This quote was provided to Radio Times: “This work is required to ensure the lower boardwalk continues to provide a wonderful experience for all our visitors… We hope to work with the local community to explore a new plaque for Ianto once the maintenance works have completed.”

While that feels a little like a bone being thrown, I remain hopeful and honestly why wouldn’t you? The memorial to a fictional character who died almost two decades ago is only now being taken down and should be replaced by an official plaque. That’s incredible, and absolutely what Mr Jones deserves. Thanks, Ianto, pizzas are on us.
