The God of War doesn’t hang around. Not long at all after confirmation of Ryan Hurst and Callum Vinson as Kratos and Atreus, we have our first still from the God of War TV adaptation.

Yep, that’s our boy alright! Honestly that’s a rather more reined in beard than Hurst’s had before, most notably during his Sons of Anarchy days. The pallid skin is there, the tattoos are there, the gear. It looks good to me. But then I remember when the first images of Henry Cavill as Geralt were released and the weeping and rending of garments about how bad that was going to be.

God, that officially counts as the ‘good old days’ now, huh? We need better good old days. Or just to pay way less attention to them.

Anyway, before I roll out my TED talk about how nostalgia is murdering fandom and the capacity for joy, what really pops for me in this shot is Vinson. He looks so determined! And I love how you can see the energy between the two guys so clearly. Kratos wanting to be a supportive dad but painfully aware his kid’s not quite doing it right. Atreus wanting to do it right but painfully aware he’s about to take a life, and a vast tattooed demi-god is going to be disappointed with him no matter what he does. You got this, little guy!

God of War is the next one through the door at Amazon following the remarkable success of Fallout. It also stars Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn as Brok. It’s filming now.
