As we sprint down towards the final section of awards season, Alasdair Stuart has some excellent news about the Ryan Coogler-produced X-Files reboot.
Coogler, writer and director of the extraordinary Sinners, has been working on this for a while and now we’ve got confirmation that a pilot is go, a showrunner is in place and the show has its first star.
That pilot first. It’ll hit Hulu, which means Disney+ for us, UK chums. It’s going to be show run by Jennifer Yale, whose previous credits include spy-fi current show The Copenhagen Test, deeply weird early Marvel show Legion…
Actually I’m going to put that on a line all by itself. Legion is unbelievably odd. Relentlessly odd. Frequently brilliant and maybe don’t watch the final season.
And we’re back! Yale’s also worked on early Apple TV post-apocalyptic hit See. So basically, she’s got the perfect background for this, and, it seems, the perfect first star.
Danielle Deadwyler has been cast as one of the two leads. Deadwyler has previously been seen in these parts in the excellent if flawed The Woman in the Yard, the much funner than I was expecting (and not a British comedy) Carry-On, Till and the revelatory I Saw The TV Glow. She’s playing one of two leads; according to the synopsis: ‘Two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents – one played by Deadwyler – form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.’
Oh that sounds fun, and that sounds like some very smart choices are being made on how to connect this to the previous show.
Coogler’s Sinners is one of the best movies made this century and is up for a record-breaking number of Oscars. I hope it wins all of them. All his other movies are great. Seriously. Dude’s a genius. Watch them all, watch I Saw The TV Glow and check out the early to mid seasons of the original X-Files on most streaming networks.
